Practice and School [PUSCH]

PUSCH is a project at secondary schools funded by the state of Hesse and the European Social Fund. The program enables students without a school-leaving certificate to obtain their lower secondary school certificate through targeted and individualized support. A stronger focus on practical experience also enhances the students' vocational skills to facilitate their transition into the world of work.

Target audience

  • Students with significant learning and performance deficits
  • Young people with special educational needs in the context of inclusion
  • Students whose native language is not German after participating in lessons in an intensive class

Goals

  • Obtaining a school leaving certificate
  • Improving training and employment skills

Content & Services

The aim is to support young people in achieving vocational qualifications and a secondary school leaving certificate through vocational training measures and competency-oriented general education as well as practical vocational instruction. A high proportion of practical work in the project fosters interest in career options and allows students to experience their own skills and abilities. The practical component of PUSCH offers all students a fantastic opportunity to try things out, gain effective, work-related experience, and explore career options. Furthermore, social-pedagogical support aims to promote the individual potential and social skills of the young people. Additional counseling services, for example, for individual problems, are offered by the PUSCH coach. Each PUSCH class has a dedicated PUSCH coach to provide social-pedagogical and career guidance, as well as individualized support for the students.

In cooperation with the class teachers, social-pedagogical activities and career-oriented projects are also carried out. Joint discussions with parents also serve to support the young people in choosing their apprenticeship and in planning their lives.

Duration & Course

PUSCH classes can be established within the secondary school track as a one- or two-year program. A parallel regular program must always be available at the school. At integrated comprehensive schools, a pedagogical unit consisting of a preparatory year in grade 8 and a subsequent PUSCH class in grade 9, geared towards graduation, can be established. The integrated regular class serves as the regular program.
