Open bicycle workshop in Bensheim
Dozens of bicycles lean against the wall, the smell of oil and cleaner fills the air, and tools and bicycle parts are tucked away on the walls and in boxes. The bicycle workshop, where refugees from the 'Neustart Bergstraße' project can repair, check, and make their bikes roadworthy again, has been in operation since February 2017. Three times a week, work can be done on bicycles in the workshop below the Bildungswerk der Hessischen Wirtschaft e. V. (BWHW).
The project is commissioned by the Bergstraße district's "Neue Wege" job center. The program offers recognized refugees initial vocational orientation and then placement in jobs subject to social insurance contributions. The goal is, on the one hand, to promote the mobility of asylum seekers and give them the opportunity to move more quickly within the Bergstraße area. On the other hand, it offers the refugees employment that provides structure to their day and week. Refugees will restore lost and discarded bicycles to roadworthy condition. They will be supported by two BWHW employees.
Important: this offer is not only for refugees and those in need!
The workshop is open to everyone interested every Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There are already around 25 bicycles, most of them in working order. Additional old bikes, spare parts, helmets, and locks are welcome as donations. Donations can be dropped off at the workshop during opening hours.
