Literacy and basic education
Promote basic education
Signs, forms, safety instructions, ticket machines – without sufficient reading and writing skills, everyday life and work can sometimes become complicated.
Around 6.2 million adults aged 18 to 64 have low literacy and therefore have difficulty reading and writing.
According to the 2018 Leo study by the University of Hamburg, this represents 12% of the total population.
More than 62% of this group of people are employed.
For more than 50% of them, German is their native language.
Low literacy puts people at a disadvantage.
